On 13th of July this Year, the TechTwirls team visited Kaplong Girls High School in Bomet. We arrived at 12 PM, were warmly received by the staff, and had lunch before the session with the students started at 2 PM. The excitement in the air was evident as the students prepared to hear from us about opportunities in the tech industry.
Kate Ratemo kicked off the session by introducing the importance of women joining the tech space. She highlighted the gender gap in the industry and explained how young women can contribute to solving real-world problems through technology. Kate also shared insights into software engineering, touching on its key role in creating innovative solutions and the growing demand for software engineers globally.
Next, Finette Kawira spoke about Quality Assurance (QA), explaining the critical role QA plays in ensuring the functionality and reliability of software products. She gave practical advice on the courses students could apply for to pursue careers in QA and shared information on the universities in Kenya offering tech-related programs. Her talk provided a clear path for students looking to enter this crucial field.
The final speaker, Fauzeena Kana, introduced the students to cybersecurity and system administration. She explained the importance of cybersecurity in today’s interconnected world and the need for skilled professionals to protect data and systems. Fauzeena also outlined the responsibilities of a system administrator and how these roles ensure that the IT infrastructure runs smoothly. Her presentation shed light on tech areas that are often overlooked but essential to the industry.
The session ended at 4 PM, with students eager to ask questions and learn more about the tech field. The teachers expressed their gratitude for the visit, recognizing the impact it had on motivating their students. Afterward, we shared evening tea with the staff before heading back, satisfied with the success of the day and inspired to continue our outreach efforts.
